Day 29 Friday 13th May

Today Geoff drove us out of town to have a look firstly at El Questro, then on to Wyndham. It was almost 7.00 by the time we got home.
El Questro was interesting with some magnificent scenery along the way. We travelled along the Gibb River Rd for about 50km to get to the property. A big bike challenge had just finished so there were a lot of people camping. The Pentecost River flows through here as do many other rivers. We plan to return to this area next week.
We sat in the picnic area for morning tea and this huge goanna walked past, obviously looking for food.
We drove along the river looking at some of the private camping areas and found the Durack Tree. It is a large boab tree of which there are many in this area but not like this one. Hope to find out its significance when we return. The Duracks lived and explored this region extensively.
After we had explored this area we went to Wyndham, which was our original destination. It is a fairly small town on the Cambridge Gulf. We had lunch at the local pub then drove up to The Bastion. This is a lookout above the town where you can see the  5 rivers flowing into the Gulf and ultimately the Timor Sea. The view was sensational. The rivers were the Pentecost, Ord, Forrest, King and the Durack. Unfortunately it was very hazy and our photos were not very clear.
On our way home we went to Parry’s Lagoon, just outside of Wyndham. It was a wetland area with lots of birds flying and swimming around. As it was just on sunset more birds were  coming onto the lagoon. There were egrets, darters, cormorants, jacunas and many others.
