Day 27 - 28 Wednesday 11th May & Thursday 12th May

We left the east Baines Rest Area at about 9.00. We had to go through some amazing countryside with lots of rivers, huge escarpments and wet marshlands.
We stopped at the border between the Northern Territory and Western Australia. They have quarantine officers who come and check your car and van for fresh fruits and vegetables such as apples and potatoes and also honey. You can’t bring these over the border. There is a 1 ½ hour time difference between the two states so we arrived at Kununurra at about 10.00. We went to the visitors centre and now we have to organise what we want to do here.

Day 28 Thursday 12th May
This morning we had a drive around Kununurra, going up to Kelly’s Knob to a lookout to see the surrounding countryside. Then we drove around Kununurra Lake and  Lily Lagoon. We had lunch at the Kimberley CafĂ© where they had the history of the area written on the tables.
We then drove out to Lake Argyle for a 3 hour sunset cruise on the lake. The lake is huge, with as much water  as 40 Sydney harbours. The dam is about 7metres higher than usual after a very good wet season. I was amazed at the rocks and mountains and huge escarpments surrounding the lake. No one lived anywhere around the lake and we were the only boat on the lake at the time. Doug swam in the lake for a few moments. It was quite warm but the wind made it very cold when you got out. It was an interesting and amazing lake.
