Day 21 - 22 Thursday 5th May & Friday 6th May

Today we travelled to a place called Ubirr. It is about 40 kms from Jabiru and is on the east Alligator river. We did a 1 ½ km walk, going around many rock cave sites with lots of aboriginal art on the walls. Some of these paintings were done over 5000 years ago. There was even a picture of a thylacine (Tasmanian tiger) which was thought to have lived here over 4000 years ago but they were killed off when dingoes first came to the area.

We walked up to the lookout to view the most amazing scenery I have ever seen. It was simply stunning with wetlands, river, mountains, rocks, trees stretching as far as the eye could see. I would love to come back to this area when all the birds arrive.
Then we went down to Cahill’s Crossing where the Alligator River crosses the road. The water was flowing very quickly and then changed direction with the change of tide and flowed just as fast in the opposite direction. Apparently this is when the barramundi come past with crocodiles chasing them. Unfortunately we didn’t see any crocodiles nor did we catch any barramundi. Doug did catch 2 mullet but he threw them back.
Today has been one of the best experiences I have had.
