Day 143 Sunday 4th September

Happy Fathers’ Day
We had a great tea last night in the Apollo Bay pub.
What strange weather! It was very warm last night but the wind was blowing a gale. We awoke early this morning to rain and it continued to rain off and on for most of the morning. By 2.00 the sky had cleared and it was a lovely sunny day. Then by evening the wind had come up again and it was very gusty.
We set off to see the Cape Otway Lighthouse.  We travelled through a beautiful gum tree forest where we saw quite a lot of koalas sitting up in the trees. How they balance up there is astounding.
The lighthouse is amazing perched on the cliff guiding boats through Bass Strait. This is where the Southern Ocean and Bass Strait meet. It was built in 1848 as there were a number of ship wrecks off this coastline with many lives lost.
There is also a World War 2 bunker which was built to watch for German and Japanese submarines.
The views are superb with rolling hills leading down to the ocean.
