Day 142 Saturday 3rd September

We left Port Fairy at about 9.00 this morning. The day was fine with a beautiful blue sky and it was warm. It wasn’t to last as the wind came up during the morning. The countryside was beautiful with rolling green hills dotted mainly with dairy cattle but there were still a few sheep. We turned onto the Great Ocean Road and our first stop was the Bay of Islands.

The cliffs were really steep with some of the cliffs standing precariously in the water. After that we went to the Grotto. I guess the water used to come up in the grotto and it might still do so on very high tides.

After that we went to London Bridge. In 1990 part of the bridge fell down into the water and 2 people were left on the remaining section and had to be air lifted off by helicopter. How scary would that have been!

We then went to the Arch.

We arrived at Port Campbell where we had morning tea. It was a lovely seaside town with many cafes and cottages for hire. We watched as some fishermen used a crane to winch their boat out of the water as there was obviously no boat ramp. Amazing!

After morning tea we headed off to the 12 Apostles. I don’t know how many we saw but it was great to see another of Australia’s icons. There were a lot of people there doing the same thing.

We then left the road along the cliffs and climbed the mountains. There were many trees and forests along the way. The mountains rose to about 600m and they were very windy. It was very difficult pulling our van along this windy road. Eventually we came down to Apollo Bay. There were lots of cars here with lots of little cafes but the wind is blowing a gale.
